I typically try not to let the culture war sniping of the week serve as my assignment editor, but the utterly dumb fuck “debate” about paternity leave stretching into its second week now — Fellas, is it gay to take care of and bond with your newborn?
I'd go easy on assumptions that a generational shift is going to fix this any time soon. I'm a 38 y.o. stay-at-home dad of two young boys, and some of my old friends from high school and college think I'm the laziest piece of shit in the world. Never mind none of them would be able to handle my (never-ending, almost entirely thankless) job for two days without quitting, or the fact that my wife not needing to worry about the kids has allowed to her to excel beyond our wildest expectations at her job: because it's not "professional" and I myself don't make the money, a lot of people think I'm just some fucking loser that can't work a "real" job, like that old (ignorant, ridiculous) line about teachers. It's alright, though. They just don't know. I sure didn't. Those gender norms are hardwired into the American psyche in ways we're just starting to work out. But what I do know is there's a lot more love in this house than in the one where I grew up, and that's all we care about.
