Just wanted to recommend "War With The Newts" by Karel Capek, if you haven't read it. It is unbelievable. Also, "An Unkindness of Ghosts" by Rivers Solomon
That happened to me between all those books so it took me a little while to finish but it's worth sticking through. It goes a lot of places and gets a lot more sci-fi and a lot more heartbreaking but not in a bleak horrible way but a really human way I liked a lot.

Have you read N.K. Jemisen's Broken Earth trilogy? Finished it recently and thought it was really good post-apocalyptic sci-fi/fantasy.
I started the first one and liked it a lot but then lost track of it.
